هاجر أبو سلمة واحتبست أم سلمة بعده، مع أبناء عمومة أبي سلمة منعوها من أن تسافر بأولادهم فجلست زمنًا في مكة تبكي وهي تريد أن تهاجر حتى رَقّ لها ذَوُوها وأعطَوها أبنائها، فخرجت من مكة. فلما أرادت أن تخرج رآها رجل من قريش مشرك يقال له: عثمان بن أبي طلحة، فقال: ما ينبغي لهذه أن تضيع، ثم خرج معها وسافر معها، وكان إذا نزلت في المبيت أو في المَقيل ذهب عنها حتى يَحين وقت السفر، حتى أراها قرية قُباء في المدينة فقال: هذه منازل أهل قباء وهذه قرية زوجك، ورجَع. وقالت أم سلمة: ما رأيت صاحبًا أكرم ولا أعفّ من عثمان بن أبي طلحة، وهذا من أخلاق العرب؛ كانت عندهم أخلاق عظيمة. مع شركهم وكفرهم فإنهم كانت لهم أخلاق عظيمة؛ لما رأى هذه المرأة ستسافر وحدها قال: ما ينبغي لهذه أن تَضيع، وخرج معها حتى أوصلها، وكان كريمًا عفيفًا في سفره كما وصفته أم سلمة –رضي الله تعالى عنها–.
